The LumScope Methodology
Two Frameworks, One Mission
We don’t just “compare” payment providers.
We audit their infrastructure resilience.
At LumScope, we reject surface-level “Top 10” lists. We believe that choosing payment infrastructure should be as rigorous as choosing your banking partner.
That’s why we developed a dual framework: the Resilience Audit measures platform risk, while the True Cost Model calculates total operational expenses. Together, they answer both “Can I trust this provider?” and “What will it really cost me?”
Framework 1: The Resilience Audit
Platform Risk Assessment
A standardized evaluation system that assesses payment provider reliability across four critical dimensions. Every provider must prove its resilience in our Evidence Protocol to earn trust.
1. 🛡️ Platform Risk Score (25%)
The Freeze Test
Can you survive an account freeze?
- We Check: Account freeze frequency, appeal process quality, and business model tolerance (high-risk, dropshipping, digital products).
- We Reject: Providers with opaque risk models that freeze accounts without warning.
2. 🔄 Backup Feasibility (25%)
The Redundancy Test
Can you maintain a backup account?
- We Check: Multi-account policies, load balancing capabilities, and failover setup complexity.
- We Reject: Providers that prohibit backup accounts or make redundancy technically impossible.
3. 💰 Cost Transparency (25%)
The Hidden Fee Test
What are you really paying?
- We Check: Pricing documentation clarity, hidden fees (per-account, chargeback, currency conversion), and volume threshold transparency.
- We Reject: Providers with opaque “contact sales” pricing or undisclosed fee structures.
4. 🌍 Geographic Coverage (25%)
The Scale Test
Can you scale globally?
- We Check: Multi-region processing, local payment method support, and currency conversion capabilities.
- We Reject: Providers limited to single-region operations or with poor international support.
Framework 2: The True Cost Model
Total Cost of Ownership Analysis
Most payment comparisons stop at advertised rates. We calculate the hidden operational expenses that turn “cheaper” providers into budget traps.
The Iceberg Principle
A provider advertised at 2.9% + $0.30 isn’t cheap if you must pay $2/account for split payments, hire a tax consultant ($6,000/year), and spend 240 hours annually on manual compliance. We quantify these “shadow costs” and add them to the advertised rate to reveal the true Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
💼 Per-Transaction Fees
Beyond the advertised rate: per-account charges, chargeback fees, refund fees, currency conversion markups, and cross-border transaction surcharges.
🔧 Integration Overhead
What third-party tools must you purchase to make the provider functional? (Tax automation, fraud prevention, subscription management add-ons.)
⚖️ Compliance Burden
If the provider doesn’t handle tax/compliance, who pays for it? Quantifying liability transfer and manual labor is part of TCO.
How the Two Frameworks Work Together
Resilience Audit (High Risk) tells you: “Stripe has a history of freezing accounts for high-risk business models without warning.”
True Cost Analysis tells you: “For your $100k/month marketplace, Stripe Connect costs $4,800/year more than Adyen for Platforms due to per-account fees.”
Together, they answer: “Is this provider both reliable AND cost-effective for my business?”
The Evidence Protocol
In every guide, you will see our Evidence Protocol. This is where we cite the specific source for every claim we make—official pricing documentation, API capabilities, user migration experiences, and verified compliance requirements.
